Marijke was born in Holland in 1941. She was raised in a family that deeply valued music, Dutch and Norwegian culture and mountain sports. In 1960, she joined the Dutch Peace Corps and traveled to Brazil, where she organized a number of schools for illiterate children. Marijke has a Master's degree in counseling and a lifetime of counseling experience in a variety of Vermont settings. She currently is the counselor at the Brewster-Pierce Elementary School in Huntington.

Mark was born in New York State in 1939 and grew up in a family that encouraged craft, farming, art and outdoor activity. First trained as a historian, he later received an EdD in educational psychology and taught for 18 years at the University of Vermont. In 1986, he founded a publishing company focusing on industrial archeology and its preservation. The company produced and edited more than 60 magazines and seven books. Mark has also served on many boards and founded several organizations at the local, regional and national levels. He has helped organize and coordinate more than 50 weddings and other events.

Mark and Marijke met in Brazil and married shortly thereafter in Holland. They have three children--Maja, Nils and Annelies.
